For most of human history, the role of sailor was reserved for men. But women such as Grace O’Malley sometimes subverted this tradition by going to sea, usually as pirates or outsiders. There’s also a tradition in folk music which celebrates women who disguise themselves as men to board ship and follow lovers or seek adventure.
